The Steamboat Today's free app now is available in Apple's App Store and the Android Market.

— Having the latest Steamboat Springs news and information at your fingertips just got a little bit easier.

The Steamboat Today's new app launched this week for Apple and Android mobile devices, including the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The free app can be downloaded from Apple's App Store as well as the Android Market.

The app features easy-to-navigate lists of the latest Steamboat Springs and Routt County news articles as well as local weather forecasts and sports news. The app also is customizable, allowing users to choose content area quick links for the app's menu bar.

Steamboat Pilot & Today General Manager Scott Stanford said the newspaper's August 2011 survey indicated that 48 percent of readers own smartphones, up from 34 percent a year earlier. In addition, the survey revealed that 45 percent of readers own a tablet computer such as an iPad or plan to acquire one within the year.

Readers also indicated that iPhones and phones using the Android operating system now make up 67 percent of the smartphone market in Routt County. The Blackberry, which had made up 45 percent of the local smartphone market in August 2010, had fallen to just 22 percent in August 2011.

Stanford said that about 10 percent of the newspaper's Web traffic of 1 million pageviews per month now comes from a mobile device and that more than 12,000 people have accessed the newspaper's mobile site in the past 30 days.

"Our goal is to give residents and visitors news in whatever format works best for them," Stanford said. "The numbers are clear that smartphones and tablet computers are going to make up an ever-increasing portion of our readership, so apps were a logical step for us to take."
