Steamboat Stinger registration opens

— If you want in, don't wait.

The Steamboat Stinger mountain bike race will return to Emerald Mountain in downtown Steamboat Springs this summer, Aug. 16, and organizers expect the fourth annual event to fill up with the same blazing speed the previous three versions have.

"It's been showing that these types of events aren't going anywhere," Stinger race manager Colin Osborn said. "It's been pretty overwhelming with the reviews we've gotten and how many people are talking about this race. This is probably the best course, the best venue, we feel like, of any Colorado event."

There will be 500 spots open for the 50-mile Saturday bike race, the majority of which are allocated for the solo categories. Osborn said he expected the entire race to be filled within 24 hours with some categories maxing out within 20 or 30 minutes.

That means when the race goes on sale at noon Friday, it's best to be on the computer with credit card in hand. Registration is available at

Osborn is optimistic the second half of the Stinger weekend's events, the Stinger trail running marathon and half-marathon set for Aug. 17 on most of the same trails, will fill up, as well.

"They are freaks of nature, but if people are wanting to do that, we're happy to provide them a place for it."
