Steamboat Springs Running Series continues Saturday with Spring Creek Memorial
July 18, 2013
Steamboat Springs — The Spring Creek Memorial always has been a staple of the Steamboat Springs Running Series, and the popular race returns Saturday to the Spring Creek Trail.
"This race always has a great vibe. It's one of those local favorites because it's everyone's go-to as a running trail," Steamboat Springs Running Series Director Cara Marrs said.
The popular race began as a memorial to Karen Brenner Hagburg, who was struck by a truck on the Spring Creek Trail. Marrs said the annual event serves as a reminder of the importance of being aware.
"The Running Series has kept this race up, and I think it's a good message to just share the trails," Marrs said.
Marrs stressed that this will be one of the last short-course opportunities in the series with the 50-kilometer Mount Werner Classic and Steamboat Stinger marathon upcoming.
The Spring Creek Memorial will have a 9-mile course as well as a 5K that Marrs encouraged everyone to join.
"If you want to hike/run it, you definitely can," she said about the 5K. "It's really a friendly race for everyone."
The 9-mile course costs $30 and gets started at 8 a.m., and the 5K costs $25 and begins at 8:30 a.m.
Registration is available at http://www.runningseries.com through 8 p.m. Thursday. Packet pickup is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Straightline Sports. Post-race refreshments will be provided by Freshies.
