Steamboat Springs dance studio to put on recital Friday and Saturday
May 30, 2013
Steamboat Springs — As much as Elevation Dance Studio's third annual recital has to do with dance, the hours of preparation, months of choreography and making some 190 dancers into congruent, moving parts prove that deep down, it's still about music.
"One thing with our rock-themed show last year was how much they learned about the music," studio owner Renee Fleischer said. "On the coat tails of that, we wanted to do this."
"A Dance Tribute to Musical Icons" goes from Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Little Richard, Wham and the Beach Boys to music of today like Rhianna, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber.
All the pieces have been choreographed since February and take students and parents through decades of dance music.
Fleischer said they started looking at the recital in August and tried to pick a theme. After batting around a tribute to Michael Jackson — several of his pieces are on the docket including a Jackson 5 number — going through years of dance classics was the way to go in the end, she said.
"When you listen to the music, it tells you a lot about their personality," said Marty St. Pierre, 13. "It's the personality of it. It's fun. For instance, Wham is a fun and fast band."
The recital has two shows, one each Friday and Saturday at Steamboat Springs High School. Both shows begin at 6 p.m. with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $16 for adults and $13 for children 12 and younger.
Tickets can be purchased here.
Fleischer said there are limited tickets remaining and encouraged people to buy as soon as possible. She said there might be a few tickets left at the door, but those likely won't be in prime seating.
The show features more than 20 pieces from various artists. But it's the journey through the years of shows that makes this one unique.
"This is so high energy," Fleischer said. "Every piece could open the show."
