Steamboat Springs could see snowy run-up to weekend

Michael Schrantz

— Steamboat Springs could see a string of stormy days heading into the weekend.

The National Weather Service predicts that snow showers could start as early as overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. Steamboat-based meteorologist Mike Weissbluth, of, wrote that three storms should affect the area during the next week and a half. He called for the first to start Wednesday.

"The first storm occurs Wednesday night through Friday and is comprised of a couple of disturbances passing over us in locally favorable cool and moist northwest flow," Weissbluth wrote.

He said that the strength of the storms moving through late this week is uncertain, but because forecast models have a tendency to underestimate snowfall in the Steamboat area, "We could receive significant accumulations, especially during the day Thursday and possibly Friday."

Meteorologist Joel Gratz, with, predicts that Thursday could see 3 to 6 inches of fresh snow.

"Snow will fall from Wednesday night through Friday midday, and areas along and north of I-70 could see powder days on Thursday and Friday morning," Gratz wrote in his snow report for Colorado.

Weissbluth predicted Steamboat could receive 6 to 12 inches of snow by Friday morning, with light showers continuing throughout the day.

The skies will part, and the sun will shine for most of the weekend, but another storm is set to roll in Sunday afternoon, he wrote.

"Currently, a significant storm is projected from Sunday night till Monday night," Weissbluth wrote, adding that the amount of snowfall depends on how the jet stream splits the energy.

Gratz continued to predict favorable patterns for a snowy end to February.

"In fact, both the European and American GFS models show this active period for the end of February, so let's hope for the best," he wrote.

The high temperatures for the remainder of the week in Steamboat are forecast to stay in the 20s until peaking in the low 30s Saturday. Lows dip into the single digits.

Gratz posted an infrared satellite image with the blue areas showing some of the colder regions across the state. Steamboat sticks out like a cold thumb.
