Steamboat ski team to compete in state skiing today
February 18, 2010
The Steamboat Springs High School ski team hopes a little teamwork can go a long way starting today when it competes in the skiing state championships.
The Nordic portions of the two-day event will be in Frisco, and Keystone will play host to the Alpine races.
"We are really excited," Nordic coach Emily Lovett said. "We're coming off a month straight of racing every weekend, so we're in pretty strong form."
The overall team championship is decided by combining a school's efforts in the Nordic and Alpine events. Steamboat's best chance of a high finish lies in the team's depth on both ends of that spectrum.
On the Nordic side, Steamboat has a dozen skiers eager to score high. Martha Anderson, Linnea Dixson, Mallory Hoots and Eva Lambeck will ski for the girls team, and Jake Barker, Jack Burger, Dane Dixson, Aleck Gantick, Erik Lynch, Wilber Ranieri, Asher Rhode and Zeb Tipton will ski for the boys.
The event opens today with a classic skiing race and continues Friday with a skate-skiing event.
"If everyone skis their best race and just skis to their highest level, we have a good chance to at least be contenders," Lovett said.
Steamboat also has a large team qualified for the Alpine events, slalom and giant slalom.
Dixson, Anderson and Hoots will compete there in addition to on the Nordic side. Jessie Dunlop, Rachel Grubbs, Suzanne Lyon, Ali Pougiales and Megan Rosa will join them for the girls team.
Connor Bernard, Matthew Dennis, Dane Dixson, Jeffrey Gay, Ryan Hogrefe, Tommy Lyon, Erik Powers and Alec Schaffer will ski for the boys Alpine team.
"Our team dynamic is very strong this year," Alpine coach Kate Warner said. "Everyone really gets along and wants everyone else to succeed."
Linnea Dixson, meanwhile, leads a group of Sailors who will be vying for the skimeister award. Her older sister, Sarah Dixson, won the award, which honors the state's skier who was best able to succeed in both the Nordic and Alpine disciplines during the regular season, last year. Hoots and Anderson are the other top Steamboat skiers in line for that award.
