Steamboat Players auditioning May 23 and 24 for ‘Seussical’

— If you've ever wanted to bring a Dr. Seuss character to life, now is your chance.

The Steamboat Players are looking for actors and singers to perform in the upcoming production of "Seussical."

Acting auditions will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday, and music auditions will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. May 24.

Artistic Director Michael Brumbaugh described "Seussical" as weaving together many of the characters from Dr. Seuss books into one story. He said the characters, including Horton the Elephant, the Whos from Whoville, Yertle the Turtle, the Cat in the Hat and others would be familiar to a diverse audience.

Brumbaugh said that in the show, Horton the Elephant has to stand up for what's right even though those around him may not. He said the moral message isn't too heavy and the performance also includes comedy and drama.

"Overall, it's just a fun kind of show," Brumbaugh said.

He again teams up with Christel Houston, who will serve as musical director for "Seussical." The duo worked together for recent productions of "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" and "Godspell."

Brumbaugh said they're looking for actor-singers, ages 10 and older, for about 20 principal character roles. He and Houston are looking for people who can carry a tune, but Brumbaugh said there also would be parts for people who are good dancers.

He said "Seussical" doesn't have a lot of dialogue. It's mostly sung. And he said the costumes aren't over-the-top depictions of each Dr. Seuss character but that they allow the actors to relay the human elements of the roles.

The Steamboat Players also are looking to fill positions for techies, musicians and a choreographer. People interested in those positions can call Brumbaugh at 870-4533. Brumbaugh added that if people who want to audition have a conflict with the scheduled times can give him a call.

The production, presented by the Steamboat Springs Arts Council with assistance from Colorado Mountain College's Alpine Campus and, of course, the Steamboat Players, is scheduled to run from Aug. 12 to 14.

Brumbaugh said the location and ticket prices would be announced closer to the show.
