Steamboat Springs — The last day of early registration for the 20th annual Steamboat Pentathlon is Thursday.
Starting Friday, race entry will increase by $20. Those interested in registering can do so at http://www.steamboatpentathlon.com or at the Parks, Open Space and Recreational Services Department building at 245 Howelsen Parkway.
This year, the prices for the March 5 race were restructured. In the past, entry was always a flat fee. Early registration fees this year are $50 for a youth individual, $85 for an adult individual, $150 for a two-person team, $150 for a youth team, $200 for a family team and $225 for an adult team. Those costs all increase by $20 starting Friday.
Most teams, outside of the Dynamic Duo division, consist of three to five competitors.
Kate Warnke, race director and city sports coordinator, said as of this morning there were 100 spots left with more than 160 people already signed up.
The race at and around Howelsen Hill in downtown Steamboat Springs challenges individuals or teams to run up and ski down the slope and snowshoe, cross-country ski, bike and run along courses in the area.

"It's an event open to all types of racers," Warnke said. "You have youth racers as young as 9 all the way up. You have supercompetitive athletes to the people that just want to come out. It really is a race for everybody."
With it being the 20th year of the Steamboat Pentathlon, Warnke said the event would feature several new elements.
In addition to lunch at Olympian Hall, competitors will have a post-race party at Sweetwater Grill from 2 to 4 p.m., where racers will get a beer ticket. Those who enter will also get a pair of socks from SmartWool and will be eligible to win more than $4,000 in prizes.
"It's the 20th annual, so we're trying to kick it up a notch," Warnke said.
