Steamboat high school athletic yard sale set for Saturday
June 6, 2012
Steamboat Springs — In another effort to bridge the gap of an athletic budget shortfall, Steamboat Springs High School athletic teams will host a yard sale Saturday.
The event will begin at 8 a.m. in front of Gardner Field.
The boys and girls basketball and soccer teams, the football team and the cheerleading team, among others, will be in attendance.
"It's basically stuff that would be at any yard sale," Steamboat Athletic Director Luke DeWolfe said. "We'll also be putting out some old memorabilia, old jerseys and stuff, in addition to whatever parents or community members have donated."
The sale will benefit each of the participating teams and the Steamboat Springs Booster Club.
Fifteen percent of the total sales will go to the Booster Club, which helps support all 21 sports and activities at the school.
The athletic department previously faced a $30,000 budget shortfall because of rising transportation costs.
But funds were freed up through a district plan to charge a $30 Booster Club fee for Tier 1 athletes, do away with a proposal to add an administrative assistant in the central office and restructure middle school coaches contracts.
The Booster Club also held in May the inaugural Spring Sailor Luau, which raised more than $10,000 for the Booster Club, Pio Utu Scholarship Foundation and the Parent Information Committee.
Because of the recent success of the Booster Club and other fundraisers, the $30,000 shortfall now is just $11,000, which likely will be made up by the Booster Club.
Proceeds from Saturday's event will go toward that shortfall.
"We're always working toward it," DeWolfe said. "The community has really supported us lately and know where we're at with funding. We're just looking to continue that. They've really supported our teams and efforts."
The next big fundraiser will begin in August, when teams sell gold cards that offer discounts at local businesses.
