Steamboat briefs: Steamboat resident collects used goods for West Africa

Steamboat Springs — Mamadou Niass, a Steamboat Springs resident of West African origin, is collecting used goods to send in a large shipping container to Sorimiale, Mauritania. Items such as bicycles, clothing, shoes, mattresses and other household goods that are in clean, working condition are appreciated. For more information, call 970-870-3069.
Volunteers are needed for Steamboat Marathon
The Yampa Valley Volunteer Coordination Center operated by the Routt County United Way is looking for volunteers for the Steamboat Marathon weekend. Volunteers are needed for half-day shifts Friday, Saturday and Sunday to help with registration. Call 970-879-5606 for more information.
Aging Well starting several new fitness classes in June
Aging Well, a program of the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association, is sponsoring several new classes beginning in June. They include:
■ Fitness Walking with Poles with instructor Marti Irish beginning June 9. The class, which meets at Howelsen Hill next to Sombrero Stables, will run from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. for eight weeks. The cost is $40. Participants will do warm-up and cool-down stretching, work on arm strength, coordination and endurance. Call Aging Well at 970-871-7676 to pre-register.
■ Tai Chi for Health Level 1 in Yampa starting June 11. The class meets from 10 to 11 a.m. for six Saturdays (not July 2) at Yampa Town Hall. There is a suggested donation of $3 per class. Call 970-871-7676.
■ Tai Chi for Diabetes starting June 15. The class meets from 5 to 6 p.m. for four weeks at Yampa Valley Medical Center in Conference Room 1. The slow, graceful movements of Tai Chi have proven beneficial to those with diabetes. The cost is $32. Pre-register by calling Yampa Valley Medical Center Integrated Health at 970-875-2731.
■ Tai Chi Level I in Hayden starting June 10. The class meets from 9 to 10 a.m. for eight weeks at the Haven Community Center. There is a suggested donation of $3 per class. Call 970-871-7676.

Colorado Mountain College has beginning kayak course
Learn to kayak on the Yampa River with a beginning kayak class that starts Friday at Colorado Mountain College. The one-credit class costs $53 plus an additional $53 for equipment and travel costs. Ride the Rockies is going Zero Waste; help needed
Ride the Rockies is going Zero Waste with help from Denver-based Zero Waste Events and the Yampa Valley Sustainability Council. Volunteers are needed locally for Ride the Rockies' stop in Steamboat Springs from June 14 to 16. Volunteers will work three- to four-hour shifts. Library starting READ to Dogs program June 13
Be part of the "Dog Days of Summer" with Bud Werner Memorial Library's READ to Dogs program. Beginning readers ages 5 to 10 can sign up to go to the library from 2 to 4 p.m. Mondays from June 13 to Aug. 1 and practice reading out loud to a trained Heeling Friends therapy dog. A free Nurturing Fathering goes through this month
Nurturing Fathers, a 13-week program hosted by the Fatherhood Program of Routt County, will be Wednesdays through June 29. The program will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Trout Creek Meeting Room at the Routt County Courthouse Annex. The program is free, and child care and dinner will be provided.
