Driving class will be free to veterans Nov. 28 and 29
Routt County veterans will this month be honored for their service beyond Veterans Day.
The AARP Driver Safety Program class being taught in Steamboat Springs on Nov. 28 and 29 will be free to all veterans and their spouses.
An AARP news release said the nationwide promotion is meant to recognize and thank veterans for their service.
"We hope this promotion will give more people an opportunity to become more aware of their driving," said Jane Romberg, who teaches the courses with her husband, Bud. "The idea of people getting to take these courses for free is fairly unheard of."
The class will be taught from 5 to 9 p.m. Nov. 29 and from 1 to 5 p.m. Nov. 30 in the Steamboat Springs Community Center's American Legion Room. The classes will be sponsored by American Legion Post No.44.
Romberg said some drivers who complete the course will be eligible to receive a discount on their car insurance rates for three years, depending on their provider.
Veterans and their spouses who want to take the courses for free must present a form of military identification at the class. Non-veterans also can attend the course that costs $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. The course is open to all age groups, but insurance discounts are not offered to anyone younger than 50, Jane Romberg said. For more information or to register, call 970-879-0064.
