Spring Creek Memorial race returns to Steamboat on Saturday

Event includes 9-mile and 5K runs

Katie Smith runs along the rough trail of the Spring Creek Memorial 9-mile race in 2009. The Steamboat Springs Running Series event returns Saturday.

There may be no summer trail in Steamboat Springs more regularly tread or loved than Spring Creek, and the only official race to take place on the familiar track will again offer an opportunity residents and visitors don't typically get.

Saturday morning's Steamboat Springs Running Series Spring Creek Memorial run will feature a 5-kilometer race, which will trace a route familiar to anyone who's ever attacked the trail, and a 9-mile run, which cuts up along a course cleared each year for this event.

"We weed whacked it about two weeks ago, but as always, there are a couple miles in there that are very tough," race director Cara Marrs said. "People are jumping over logs, and there are loose rocks. With all these rains we've had, the foliage on the side is as tall as I am."

Both races start at the Spring Creek reservoir about half a mile up the trail. The 5K goes 2.5K out and back along the trail. The 9-mile race cuts up through the woods to Dry Lake parking lot and all the way back down Spring Creek Trail to the finish line at the reservoir.

Saturday's 9-mile race starts at 8 a.m., and the 5K begins soon after at 8:30 a.m.

Registration still is available, though the 9-mile event is close to hitting its cap of 100 runners. To sign up for the races and pay the $25 entry fee, visit http://www.runningseries.com or Ski Haus before noon Friday.

Registration for the 5K is available Saturday morning for $30.

The Spring Creek Memorial is entering its 20th year. It first ran in 1991 in remembrance of Patty Brenner Hagberg, who died after being hit by a car on the lower portion of the trail.

Today, the race is meant to remind everyone of the importance of sharing multiuse trails.

"It's important for us to remember to share trails, whether it's vehicles on lower Spring Creek, runners, mountain bikers, horseback riders or whatever," Marrs said.
