Seminars in Steamboat series loaded

Seminars at Steamboat's 2011 summer schedule has added an outspoken speaker on the nation's fiscal crisis plus a former ambassador to Afghanistan and Iraq this week. The additions boost the lecture series to five events.

"We're really excited to have five speakers in our ninth season," organizer Jane Stein said.

The series, which attracts hundreds to the Strings Music Pavilion on Thursday nights, begins during the third week in July. Newly added to the schedule are Zalmay Khalilzad, who will give "An Insider's View" on Afghanistan and Iraq on Aug. 15, and the founder of the Comeback America Initiative, David Walker, who will speak Aug. 25 about "Restoring Fiscal Sanity."

Stein said this week that the seminars also are poised to broaden their reach. National Public Radio affiliate KUNC will tape and edit the talks for rebroadcast, and Rocky Mountain PBS is expected to select one of the five talks for an edition of the television show "Colorado State of Mind."

Khalilzad called on the Obama administration in a May 2010 piece he authored in the Washington Post to provide Afghan President Hamid Karzai with a more understandable picture of America's relationship with Pakistan while reaching an understanding of how the U.S. would behave in a confrontation with Iran.

Walker, who worked in the federal General Accounting Office and was comptroller general for a decade, has said America is in denial about the severity of its budget deficits.

Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Seymour Hersh will deliver "A Foreign Policy Report from Washington: Are Obama's Policies Working?" on Aug. 4.
