— For the 2014-15 ski season, winter air service into Steamboat Springs will add nonstop flights from San Francisco and Washington, D.C., in addition to expanding flights from Seattle and Los Angeles.

“With the success of last year’s program, we have aggressively worked with the airlines to provide new and expanded access into Steamboat so that guests have a variety of convenient options to reach Ski Town, U.S.A.,” Rob Perlman, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp., said in a news release. “We have made significant strides in expanding access to Steamboat and will strongly leverage these new opportunities for the upcoming winter season.”

The addition of weekly Saturday flights from Washington-Dulles and San Francisco International into Yampa Valley Regional Airport in Hayden will provide access to major hubs for United Airlines.

“Not only do they offer us really strong local markets, but they offer us a lot of connections,” Ski Corp. Airline Program Director Janet Fischer said.

Fischer said that what has worked well for Steamboat historically has been a hub system where customers are able to find their way to the Yampa Valley through connections at larger airports.

Washington-Dulles is a big origin city for Steamboat Ski Area customers, Fischer said, and connects to major origins across the Eastern seaboard.

San Francisco will provide another option for travelers coming from Australia, after a nonstop flight from Los Angeles was added two years ago.

“We’re trying to take healthy growth with Western markets,” Fischer said.

Los Angeles started with flights on Saturday and Sunday, grew to include Thursday last year and adds Monday this upcoming season. Likewise, nonstop flights from Seattle will grow to include Sunday after starting last year with Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The Seattle also brought with it a new carrier: Alaska Airlines.

“We want to grow the flights smart so they succeed, so we can get the word out,” Fischer said.

The airline program evolves as the season approaches, and new flights from existing locations could be added in the future.

Fischer said the overall number of seats coming into YVRA this winter will not be down compared to last year. It’s just a question of how much up the number will be when all is said and done.

“We are growing our peak,” she said. “The day of weeks and dates that people want to travel is where we’ve added growth. The high demand is where we’re trying to focus the growth.”
