Steamboat remains undefeated after 42-12 thumping

Steamboat's Bryce Mayo catches a ball in warmups prior to playing Eagle Valley. It seemed to work. Mayo returned an interception 65 yards in a 42-12 Steamboat win on Friday night.

— The Steamboat Springs High School football team won Friday by a first-half knockout.

Playing at a revamped Hot Stuff Stadium in Gypsum against Eagle Valley, Steamboat needed only one half to determine the outcome. The Sailors scored just about every way possible in the first 24 minutes Friday, cruising to a 42-12 win.

Steamboat’s scores came via a punt return, an interception return, multiple passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown, all en route to a 42-0 halftime lead.

“That really was the start we wanted,” Steamboat coach Aaron Finch said. “The thing we talked about is we wanted our complete game. It turned into a complete half. We found different ways to score.”

Learning lessons from a Delta game two weeks ago in which Steamboat jumped to a 17-0 lead before letting the Panthers back into the game, the Sailors did pretty much anything they wanted from the first kickoff Friday.

For the second week in a row, Steamboat senior Joe Dover scored a touchdown the first time he got his hands on the ball. This time, it was a 75-yard punt return to put Steamboat up 7-0.

Eagle Valley (0-5 overall, 0-3 in league play) had a chance midway through the first quarter after causing a Steamboat fumble. On a fourth-down play from the Devils’ own 49-yard line, Eagle Valley quarterback Nick Pietrack found Gustavo Garcia on a deep pattern for a would-be equalizer, but the ball slipped through the freshman’s hands.

“I think we dropped a couple balls we should have had,” Eagle Valley coach John Ramunno said. “More than anything, I think we missed some tackles in the first half. But Steamboat’s got some speed, and they can score in a hurry.”

They certainly can.

Steamboat (4-0, 3-0) scored on four of its next six possessions.

Quarterback Austin Hinder ran for a touchdown and threw three more – one to Cody Harris and two to Jack Spady – to give Steamboat a 35-0 lead.

Then, with Eagle Valley driving in the last minute of the half, Steamboat senior Bryce Mayo picked off a Pietrack pass and took it 65 yards for a Sailors touchdown and a 42-0 lead.

“It’s nice when you can score so many ways,” Finch said. “It’s the second week in a row Joe’s first touch went for a score. Having him back and what he does, it makes the defense pay so much attention to him it opens

so much more up.”

With the clock running nonstop because of the lopsided score, the second half breezed by.

Eagle Valley finally started to get its running game going in the second half, but it was too little, too late. Seth Williamson scored from a yard out late in the third quarter to cut the lead to 42-6. Beto Chavez added a 1-yard plunge as the clock expired to make the game 42-12.

Steamboat may have its biggest Western Slope League game of the year at 7 p.m. Friday at Gardner Field, when the Sailors square off against Palisade. As it stands, it will be a showdown for the top spot in the league between two teams who know each other well.

“It’s Palisade. They’re a tough, physical team, and they’re so well coached,” Finch said. “They have great kids that play hard. No question touchdowns aren’t going to come as easy. They’re going to want to control the pace of the game. We’re going to have to get better in every aspect to have a chance.”
