— There’s a new resource for Steamboat Springs residents looking to buy inexpensive large home appliances.

Routt County Habitat for Humanity opened a Habitat ReStore appliance outlet at 718 Oak St. in Old Town Steamboat. At ReStore, Habitat sells used large appliances such as stoves, dishwashers, washers, dryers and refrigerators at discounted prices.

Martin Krueger, who manages the store, said it was opened about a month ago to raise money for the next Habitat build, much as the LIFT-UP of Routt County thrift store helps pay for operation of LIFT-UP’s food bank.

Habitat is accepting applications from people in need of housing until May 1 for a two-unit duplex in west Steamboat that it plans to break ground on this fall.

Krueger said there are no income restrictions for ReStore customers. He said it’s for everyone.

“We’ve sold about $2,000 worth of appliances already,” he said. “And we’re hoping, our goal right now is to get more exposure so people in the community know a good place to donate their wares if they’re remodeling or upgrading their appliances. And for people in the community to know where to buy used appliances.”

Krueger said Habitat prices new appliances at half of retail and used appliances at about 30 percent of retail. Depending on condition, items currently at the ReStore range in price from a $39 dryer to a $549 water heater.

Some items are pictured on the Habitat website, http://www.routtcohabitat.org.

The ReStore is open from 3 to 7 p.m. Fridays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays or by appointment.

Habitat ReStores are common in larger cities, where they also accept donations of home fixtures and materials, Krueger said. He said the ReStore might expand in the future.

“I could see us going in that direction, but we want to start small, see what the need is,” he said.

Krueger said Habitat is looking for appliance donations and people to volunteer at the ReStore. Call 970-439-0246 for more information.
