Rollingstone Ranch, Haymaker Golf Course set to open this week, weather permitting

— The golfing season in Steamboat Springs will shift into high gear this weekend as the Rollingstone Ranch Golf Club and Haymaker Golf Course join the Steamboat Golf Club as choices for local golfers and visitors.

Brian Thorne, director of golf at Rollingstone Ranch, was hard at work Monday afternoon setting up the pro shop for the start of the 2014 season.

"Everybody is pretty excited to get going after a long winter," Thorne said Monday. “The golf course came through the winter in excellent shape."

Thorne said he is expecting the course to open at 10 a.m. Friday and is encouraging locals to call the pro shop at 970-879-1391 for tee times. Golfers can also go online at to get a slot for the opening day of the season.

Thorne said the front nine will be open and is looking pretty good for this time of the season.

"We have less snow mold and vole damage than we've seen in the past," Thorne said. "It's allowed us to aerify the greens sooner than we have been able to do in the past.”

Early season golfers also will enjoy discounted rates through June 8 this year. The fees for 18 holes of golf is $75 before 2 p.m. and $65 after that time.

Regular season rates will go into effect starting June 9. Those rates are $140 for visitors before 1 p.m. and $125 for Routt County residents. Between 1 and 3 p.m., rates drop to $120 for visitors and $95 for locals. After 3 p.m., the rates decrease to $95 for visitors and $75 for locals. There is also a special rate for golfers who are willing to walk nine holes for $35 per golfer. On Tuesdays, locals can play all day at Rollingstone Ranch for $75.

For the first time, the Rollingstone Ranch also will offer a provisional membership to golfers, which is basically a membership without the initiation fee. The cost is $3,000 for the season for a single golfer and $4,500 for a family, which includes a husband and wife and two children.

Thorne said the program is designed to draw new members to the Rollingstone Ranch Golf Club. He explained that golfers taking part in the provisional membership will pay reduced initiation fees if they decide to become a full member.

"We are making this offer to draw new people to the club," Thorne said. "It's brand-new this year."

He added the program will be year-to-year and may just last this season or may run for a few seasons based on its success in finding new members. The fee includes green fees, range fees and a cart for the season.

On Saturday, the Haymaker Golf Course also will open for the 2014 season. The course’s head professional Tom Taylor said tee times will be on a first-come, first-served basis Saturday. Then on Sunday. golfers can start calling the pro shop for tee times.

The cost to play 18 holes is $57 for locals all season. Visitors will pay $75 for an 18-hole round until June 8. After that date, the fees will increase to $115.
