Rocket Fizz candy store preps for grand opening celebration
June 6, 2014
Steamboat Springs — Friday night into Saturday morning, Patrick Evans will be working to install neon signage above his Rocket Fizz location on Lincoln Avenue in downtown Steamboat Springs.
The nostalgia-heavy candy store has been open for about a month already, but Evans is prepping for its official grand opening celebration this weekend.
"We did a soft opening because we wanted to get our foot in the door and get prepped for summer," Evans said.
Everything in the store will be discounted during this weekend's grand opening celebration, Evans said, and there will be raffles, contests and giveaways, as well.
Evans also owns Rocket Fizz franchises on the Front Range and in Salt Lake City, but Steamboat is his first store in a more seasonal market.
"I just love the town," he said.
Evans has visited Steamboat with his son and daughter and said he enjoys the community and the stores in the downtown area.
The family atmosphere of Steamboat makes it a good match for Rocket Fizz, he said.
There are more than 3,000 to 4,000 items in the store at any one time, Evans said, along with about 500 types of bottled soda.
"My vendor list is ginormous," he said.
Evans said his background in cost control and accounting helps him keep a handle on the expansive inventory.
Some of the more unique flavors of soda (think bacon and buffalo wings) have been popular across his stores, Evans said. Japanese candies and old, nostalgic toys also are great sellers.
"Everyone likes nostalgia," he said.
