Ride the Rockies summer cycling event to make a round in Steamboat
February 10, 2014
Steamboat Springs — The Denver Post announced during the weekend that its 29th annual Ride the Rockies summer cycling event will include a couple of days in Steamboat Springs with stretches from Winter Park to town June 9 and the Steamboat Springs Loop on June 10.
The stretch will be the second and third legs of the six-stage race. The entire event is a 473-mile route where cyclists will climb nearly 30,000 vertical feet, but most of all, it's meant to be noncompetitive.
"Cycling is an intrinsic part of Colorado's culture," Denver Post President and CEO Mac Tully said in a news release. "Ride the Rockies affords participants and volunteers an opportunity to escape the everyday, all while enjoying charming communities, boosting our economy and bring awareness to non-profits that do great deeds in our own backyard."
According the the news release, the annual event brings in an average economic impact of $250,000 for communities hosting cyclists' overnight stays.
Although the race is noncompetitive and riders are encouraged to ride at their own pace, training ahead of time is "strongly recommended," the release stated.
In the past, the race has been all-encompassing age wise, hosting participants from 7 to 85 years of age.
This year, it will start with an 89-mile stretch from Boulder to Winter Park on June 8. The next leg is from Winter Park to Steamboat, then riders will complete the Steamboat Springs Loop along Twentymile Road, a 53-mile stretch, on June 10. On June 11, riders will leave Steamboat and head to Avon, crossing State Bridge on the 82-mile leg.
June 12 features a series of high-altitude rides from Avon to Breckenridge, then riders will finish up from Breckenridge to Golden, traversing the event's highest point at Loveland Pass (11,992 feet).
Registration can be done online at http://www.ridetherockies.com. Applications will be accepted through March 2.
