Pilot & Today to hold holiday bake-off
November 21, 2009
Steamboat Springs — Nothing says the holidays like turning out your most time-tested baked goods.
This holiday season, the Steamboat Pilot & Today invites community members to share their favorite holiday baking traditions in the newspaper's first Holiday Dessert Bake-Off.
The Pilot & Today is searching for the sweetest recipes in Routt County, and it's offering prizes and recognition for the treats that are judged to be the best.
Bakers can submit one recipe in four categories: pies, cakes, cookies and miscellaneous desserts. Registration closes Dec. 2.
Participants must bring a copy of their recipe and a finished dessert to the Pilot & Today office from 7 and 10 a.m. Dec. 3. A photographer will take a picture of each contestant with his or her dessert. Pie and cake entries should be a whole pie or cake, and cookie and miscellaneous entries must include at least two dozen servings.
A panel of community judges will choose a favorite in each category. Judging is at 11:30 a.m. Dec. 3. A community coffee break, open house and dessert tasting with Pilot & Today publisher Suzanne Schlicht and editor Brent Boyer is at 1 p.m. Dec. 3. Anyone attending the coffee break will have a chance to taste the Bake-Off entries and vote for a community choice winner.

"We think this has the potential to be a really fun event that brings together a cross section of the community in celebration of good food," Boyer said. "Our county has so many great chefs and time-honored family recipes. This is a chance to share your favorite desserts with your neighbors in a fun, relaxed atmosphere."
There are $100 gift certificates to Ace at the Curve and City Market for the winners in six categories: Best Pie, Best Cake, Best Cookies, Best Miscellaneous Dessert, Best Presentation and Community Choice.
Entries must include a recipe to be eligible for judging or prizes. Any non-original recipes — including those from magazines, cookbooks, Web sites and otherwise — must be credited to their source.
The "Steamboat Today" morning show on Steamboat TV18 will debut a taping of the judging process from 7 to 9 a.m. Dec. 4. On the same day, a slide show of all submitted desserts and recipes will be featured at http://www.exploresteamboat.com, and the Steamboat Today newspaper will recognize Holiday Bake-Off winners.
