Oak Creek to celebrate fire department’s 100th year

Town's Labor Day festivities start Friday

— The Oak Creek Fire Protection District is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The town also is celebrating the same milestone for its water services. The dual events have made way for a combined theme for the town's Labor Day weekend: fire and water.

The events ramp up Friday with Soroco volleyball and football games followed by a pub crawl. The crawl ends with a live drawing and music at 10 p.m. at The Colorado Bar.

Saturday starts with a pancake breakfast at the high school at 7 a.m.

Events continue in Decker Park and on Main Street throughout the day, ending at The Colorado Bar again with a comedy show and live music.

Oak Creek Mayor Nikki Knoebel said that the annual fishing derby Saturday is always a highlight of the weekend. "Sixty to 100 kids show up every year," she said, adding that a variety of prizes are awarded for first fish, largest, smallest, etc.

Saturday also hosts the second year of the Labor Day car show, and an art show on Main Street was added this year.

A live auction will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at The Colorado Bar with the proceeds going toward future Labor Day celebrations. "That's what keeps us staying alive," Knoebel said. About $1,500 has been raised in the past couple of years, and Knoebel said the hope is to exceed that this year. Also Sunday, the town's pump track bicycle park, which benefited from grants from LiveWell Northwest Colorado and Great Outdoors Colorado, has its ribbon cutting at 3 p.m. LiveWell also donated 58 children's bike helmets to be given away.

The weekend's theme will be worked into the parade at 11 a.m. Monday with the decoration of the floats. Knoebel said the Coal Queen float, in particular, would incorporate water elements. On the other side of the theme, the entire Oak Creek fire department will be acting as the grand marshals for the parade, and the department will drive its original 1937 fire engine in the parade.
