Nicole Inglis: Mud season a giant sigh of relief for Steamboat Springs
April 11, 2013
Steamboat Springs — If the state of my foyer is any indication, it's mud season.
Even if Closing Day is a powder day, the blissfully peaceful offseason is upon us.
For those who won't get to revel in the joys of an empty Central Park Plaza parking lot, I hope Moab is nice this time of year.
But to me, the April offseason is one giant sigh of relief for Steamboat, a time to recharge after a thankfully busy and powder-filled season. The peace and quiet is welcome, and you won't see me rushing to get out of town come Monday morning.
If it's your first mud season in Steamboat, I hope this column will help ease your fears a bit. Sure, there aren't as many parties, crowded bars or live music events, but many entertainment venues choose to stay open even as town empties.
❱❱ The Tap House Sports Grill will be closed Sunday and half of Monday. After opening at 4 p.m. Monday, the Tap House will continue trivia on Wednesdays and karaoke on Thursdays.
❱❱ Old Town Pub also keeps its lights on, with Monday open mic nights and live music continuing intermittently beginning in late April.
❱❱ Up on the mountain, The Tugboat Grill & Pub will remain open seven days a week, though they're planning to cut back on live entertainment likely until Memorial Day weekend.
❱❱ Carl's Tavern will be closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, and will be reopening at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Carl's will be open at 3 p.m. each day, extending happy hour by one hour and keeping the Bluegrass Wednesday theme going through mud season. Friday and Saturday bands will be on hiatus for now.
❱❱ The Ghost Ranch begins its mud season hours by closing Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. It will reopen Thursday with jam band Old Shoe. Friday is country with Bonnie and the Clydes, and the Worried Men close out the Ghost Ranch's winter season April 20. After that, the Ghost Ranch will be closed through May 8.
❱❱ McKnight's Irish Pub & Loft also will be open through April 20 and will close April 21 to 25. After that, McKnight's will open at 2 p.m. April 26 and 27 and at 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays through May 20.
❱❱ Another new entertainment venue, the Chief Theater, has a special body music event Monday with Keith Terry and will continue the Friday film series on architecture. The annual Steamboat Springs Arts Council fundraiser Cabaret is set for the second week of May at the Chief.
❱❱ The Boathouse is open through Mud season, except on Mondays and Tuesdays.
❱❱ Sweetwater Grill will take some time off and close Sunday for a remodel. After reopening in May, live music returns to Sweetwater on Friday nights with an outdoor show with Old Town Pickers planned for May 31.
And that brings us to June: the heart of summer, tubing season and free concerts. That wasn't so painful, was it?
