New Warren Miller ski film to screen Friday, Saturday in Steamboat

Steamboat Springs — Chad Bowdre admits showing a Warren Miller film last year didn't prove to be the biggest fundraiser for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club.
But when it came time to decide whether to show the 64th edition of the ski film icon’s latest release, "Ticket to Ride," Bowdre said it didn't take much to make that decision.
"It's a rite of passage into each winter to watch Warren Miller and get ready for that," said Bowdre, who is the director of operations for the Winter Sports Club.
But after not breaking even last year, Bowdre said he's confident the film this time will make the club at least a little money.
After showing at Colorado Mountain College last year, this year's film has moved downtown to the Chief Theater. The movie will show at 6 and 9 p.m. Friday and at 3, 6 and 9 p.m. Saturday. Saturday's 3 p.m. show will be family friendly, and no alcohol will be served.
All shows are $15 except for Saturday's 3 p.m. show, which is $10.
Tickets can be purchased at All That Jazz, through the Winter Sports Club or at the door if tickets are still available.
"I think this one has more excitement," Bowdre said. "The Chief Theater is a really cool place to have it. The atmosphere in there will be a lot of fun."
After years of subpar films compared with industry standards, "Ticket to Ride" has received good reviews. There is a better script, better camera shots, better music and a story to accompany the film.
"It's awesome," Bowdre said. "The footage is just very, very impressive. They do a better job than they used to. It's a good storyline, and they are getting some unique footage. I think a big help was GoPro's helmet on all that. There is some really neat filming."
Those who attend the film also will be entered into the Warren Miller prize drawing, which takes place in January and features weeklong ski trips to Montana and Norway as well as a heli-skiing trip to Alaska.
Ski and snowboard films are starting to heat up in Steamboat. In addition to two days of the Warren Miller film, the Chief also will host Sherpas Cinema’s "Into the Mind" and Matchstick Productions’ "McConkey" about legendary extreme skier Shane McConkey on Nov. 22.
