Logging resumes at Steamboat Ski Area

Beetle-killed tree-removal operation is largest to date

— The Steamboat Ski Area will embark on its largest logging operation to clear out beetle-killed lodgepole pine trees.

During the next two months, logging crews will be removing an estimated 100 acres of trees, and numerous hiking and biking trails will be closed below Thunderhead Peak.

“It is imperative that the public understands the dangers associated with an operation of this scope and abide by all closures and keep clear of the impacted areas,” said Doug Allen, vice president of mountain operations for Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp.

Phase 1 will focus around the Main Drag ski trail, as well as Boulevard, Giggle Gulch, Big Foot, Eagles Nest, Beeline and Yoo Hoo. Phase 2 will take place along lower Why Not, Phase 3 between Vagabond and Rudi’s Run, Phase 4 along Surprise and Why Not and Phase 5 along BC Ski Way. If the schedule allows, crews also will remove a large pocket of timber below So What.

Daily trail closures, detours and updates will be available online through the Trail Status Map, through the summer activities recording at 970-879-7300 and at the information center in Gondola Square.

Allen said most logging work will take place after the ski area ends summer operations and when the gondola is operated during only weekends. Detours will be offered to people who want to hike or bike to the top of the mountain.
