Library provides 2 database classes

Jack Weinstein

There's a vast academic resource available to Steamboat Springs residents, but Jackie Kuusinen thinks many people probably don't know about it.

Kuusinen, the associate reference librarian at Bud Werner Memorial Library, is teaching two classes today about the library's databases and online resources. They will be at noon and 6 p.m. in Library Hall. The classes are intended for teachers, parents and students, but anyone is welcome to attend.

She said the classes would provide instruction about how to use the resources and teaching tools the library subscribes to and makes available at no charge to library users.

The databases include, among others, auto repair, encyclopedias, grant writing, health and medical, scholarly journal articles and workplace skills. Other resources include ACT, SAT and other exam test preparation. There are resources for teachers and students.

"They're wonderful resources, and they're free," Kuusinen said. "You can't just Google this stuff. It's proprietary. It's copyrighted information. We want to enrich the lives of the community. These are really useful resources for people."

Kuusinen said each database is searchable and user-friendly. She added that with the exception of the ancestry database, they're all available online at the library's Web site.

The hour-long classes will provide a broad overview of how to access and search the databases, Kuusinen said. She said her presentation then would get more specific about the resources that would be useful for teachers and students.

Those who attend can bring their own wireless-enabled laptop or follow along with Kuusinen's presentation, which will be projected onto a large screen.

Nearly 50 people attended last week's genealogy workshops, Kuusinen said. She hopes this week's database workshops will be as popular.

"We purchase these resources for the community," she said. "I basically want to get these resources out to the people who aren't aware of them. I want to see increased use of these databases."
