Library offers free mind-body workshops

— For the next five Saturday mornings, Bud Werner Memorial Library will offer free sampler workshops in mind-body awareness.

"I got this idea, honestly, because Library Hall is stunning, and it was one of my first thoughts when I walked in there. I thought, 'What a beautiful place to do yoga,'" said Jennie Lay, adult programs coordinator for the library.

Part of Lay's inspiration comes from her own love of yoga and other mind-body practices, and part comes from the natural lighting, cork floors and subdued feeling of Library Hall at Bud Werner Memorial Library, she said.

The workshops start Saturday with Meghan Stockdale teaching Vinyasa Flow yoga from 10 to 11:15 a.m. in Library Hall. Session topics and teachers change each week, with a five-part roster that features Qigong, Pilates yoga fusion, Kundalini yoga and Hatha yoga.

"We want people to experience it and sample it and then go out and utilize all these wonderful resources around town. … This is just another way to get introduced to all those wonderful teachers around town," Lay said.

Neil O'Keeffe, of Three Treasures Healing Arts and The Yoga Center of Steamboat, will give an introduction to Qigong on Nov. 28. A kind of "moving meditation," Qigong is a category of mind-body awareness practices that can be dynamic or passive and often is used for maintaining and restoring health, O'Keeffe said.

"If people are looking for a low-impact activity that allows them to not only work on the physical structure but also the internal structure — meaning stress, anxiety, organ health, that kind of thing — it's a really well-balanced discipline in that regard," he said.

Admission to all workshops is free, and donations will be accepted. Each volunteer teacher selected a charity to give 100 percent of donations from his or her workshop. Benefiting organizations include the LIFT-UP Food Bank, Community Cultivation, the Children of Eric Purvis Memorial Fund and Bud Werner Memorial Library.

Lay hopes the workshops will offer a new way for community members to learn about and use the library's collections, including a variety of resources about mind-body awareness and practices. She's also looking forward to a broad turnout at the workshops.

"I'm hoping it's people who already have a practice and love these teachers and also people who maybe haven't experimented with these kinds of practices before. … The library is a really welcoming, noncompetitive, comfortable atmosphere for them to try these things," Lay said.
