Labor Day weekend brings downtown sidewalk sales

Zirkel Trading owner Steve Hitchcock assists customers Marc and Pam Kelly, of Idaho, during a past sidewalk sale in downtown Steamboat Springs. This Labor Day weekend, businesses will offer sales from Friday through Saturday.

— If the weather isn't evidence enough that fall is soon upon Steamboat Springs, at least the annual Come Sale Away Sidewalk Sale event will be.

It's often known as a win-win situation for local downtown businesses and happens once in the spring and fall and during Memorial Day weekend.

"As a consumer, you can get new products at some of the best prices you can get all summer," said Tracy Barnett, manager for Mainstreet Steamboat Springs. "By helping merchants clear shelves, you help them make room for the new stuff coming in."

Eyeing something in one of the downtown shops all year? This is the time to get it.

Tourists and locals will fill the 10 blocks of downtown starting Friday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. The end-of-season and back-to-school bargains from the businesses along Lincoln Avenue will continue until Monday.

"We really just love giving our customers a good deal on the late-season merchandise," said Barbi Johnston, owner of Kali's Boutique. "It's great to see everyone out and about."

Bringing people out of the woodwork, so to speak, the event gets people into stores and brings newcomers to various stores.

"A lot of different kinds of people come for the opportunity to get sale merchandise, but we also get to see some customers for the first time, and it's always great to talk with them if they have never been in the store," said Steve Hitchcock, owner of Zirkel Trading.

Not only is this type of community-wide sale a chance to purchase some great deals, it offers a different kind of shopping experience.

"It's a memory-making experience," Barnett said about the sidewalk sales in correlation to the various events going on throughout Labor Day weekend. "People want to buy clothing with a memory connected to it, and this is a way to do that."

Hoping for good weather to showcase clothes outside and bring people downtown, business owners and organizers are looking forward to what the weekend will bring.
