Steamboat Springs — Focusing on dance grooves and carefree lyrics, the guys in Denver rock and funk band Kinetix are unabashed about what to call their music: "party rock."
"We've called our music party rock before because a lot of the content is referring to that, just letting go of your everyday worries and living for the moment," keyboardist and singer Eric Blumenfeld said.
"I don't know if we actually decided that's what we wanted to do when we started. We all like playing music and we all have a bunch of diverse, different tastes — everything from pop to hip-hop and R&B and everything in between," Blumenfeld said.
When all the band members' musical tastes come together, the result is a beat-heavy brand of dance music that relies heavily on pop rock and funk influences.
Kinetix takes a Steamboat Springs stage for the first time at 10 p.m. today at Mahogany Ridge Brewery and Grill. The cover charge hasn't been determined.
The band got together a little more than four years ago, when the members found themselves playing together often as students at the University of Denver's Lamont School of Music. Kinetix is Blumenfeld on keyboards and vocals; Adam Lufkin on guitar and vocals; Jordan Linit on guitar; Josh Fairman on bass; and Jack Gargan on drums.
With Blumenfeld and Lufkin contributing lead vocals, the band is working to develop more songs where the two musicians trade lines back and forth. Blumenfeld listed bands such as Maroon 5 and Blues Traveler — groups that layer soulful, pop-oriented vocals over rock backgrounds — as reference points for his and Lufkin's singing styles.
"We've definitely noticed a progression in the music over the years, and I think we're honing in on what we want our sound to be, and that's that rock and funk mix," Blumenfeld said.
The group opened a Feb. 20 show featuring Karl Denson's Tiny Universe and Galactic at The Fillmore in Denver. Kinetix shared a New Year's Eve bill with The Greyboy Allstars, and toured extensively with Flobots in November and December. On tap so far for 2010 are spots on the Summer Camp and Wakarusa music festivals. A third studio album is scheduled for a spring release.
