Halloween Safety Tips

Costumes:

• Make costumes bright and reflective or add reflective taps for greater visibility. Obtain flashlights with fresh batteries

• Ensure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame

• Use flame-resistant costumes

• Use face makeup instead of masks, which can cover your eyes and make it hard to see

On the trick-or-treat trail:

• Plan the route ahead of time

• Make sure adults know where the children are going and have a flashlight to be seen by drivers

• Visit only the homes that have a porch light on. Accept treats at the door and never go inside

• Walk only on sidewalks, not in the street. (Do not cut across yards or alleys).

• Candy and treats are very sweet but make sure a grown-up checks your goodies before you eat. Discard any items with brand names that you are not familiar with

Home safe home:

• Clear the porch or front yard of any obstacles that a child could trip over.

• Check outdoor lights and replace burned-out bulbs.

• Restrain pets so they do not inadvertently jump on or bite a trick-or-treater.

• Sweep leaves from sidewalks and steps.

• Use a glow stick instead of a candle in the jack-o-lantern to avoid a fire hazard.
