The works displayed at the new RED Contemporary art gallery in the Sheraton Steamboat Resort include those by Monroe Hodder, an internationally recognized abstract painter.

— A new art gallery at the Sheraton Steamboat Resort features local contemporary artists and an effort to revive art culture at the mountain.

RED Contemporary opened Sunday in the Sheraton breezeway and will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday through the ski season.

The upscale venue is "very minimal and a good, stimulating visual experience," said gallery owner and contributing artist Susan Schiesser.

Featured artists include local contemporary painters Schiesser and Pat Walsh; locals Monroe Hodder, an internationally recognized abstract painter, and Fred Hodder, a photographer; and Denver sculptor Michael Clapper.

The idea for RED Contemporary came to Schiesser at the beginning of December, when "several art aficionados" approached her about bringing a new cultural element to the mountain area that gave it some of the cultural energy of downtown Steamboat, Schiesser said.

"I felt, and my group felt, that it's important for the vitality of the town in this kind of economic time to keep both areas vibrant, and that's what we hope to do with this gallery," Schiesser said.

From there the turnaround was quick.

Schiesser opened the doors to the gallery Sunday after three weeks of planning, licensing and designing, with business help from Walsh and design help from the Hodders, Schiesser said.

Schiesser is describing RED Contemporary as a "pop-up gallery" for now, she said. Pop-up galleries are art spaces that open up for a short time in vacant spaces, she said.

The current plan is for RED Contemporary to stay open through the ski season, she said.
