Flying Wheels to host BMX event in Steamboat
August 2, 2011
The excitement of BMX racing will return to Howelsen Hill on Thursday night as the Team Flying Wheels BMX Race Series hosts its fifth event of the season.
"We had about 25 racers out for our last event," organizer Brian Deem said. "But I think we can do even better if we let people know this series is happening."
The series, which hosts events every other week throughout the summer, plans to hold a total of 10 races by the time October rolls by.
The races are open to riders ranging from striders to adults. Riders will be placed in age divisions that are determined by the size of the field on race night.
The races feature a competitive format where riders take part in three "motos" each night. The winners earn points that are turned into a national points database sanctioned by USA BMX. Those results can qualify riders for regional and national-level events.
"This is a national organization," Deem said. "We are one of 350 tracks across the country who host races like these."
Registration for Thursday's event begins at 5 p.m., with races starting between 6:15 and 6:30 p.m. The cost to race is $8. For more information, call Gina Grether at 970-871-9500.
