Steamboat Springs — The season's first major snowfall was to blame for a slew of car crashes and slide-offs Friday, but police reported no serious injuries. Meanwhile, weather forecasters say at least a couple more inches of snow could fall today and tonight — and that's on top of the 8 or so inches reported in Steamboat Springs by mid-afternoon Friday.
Colorado State Patrol Trooper Rick Kaspar said his agency responded to six one-car accidents by Friday afternoon. One was on Rabbit Ears Pass, two on U.S. Highway 40 near Hayden, one on Routt County Road 36 and two more on Colorado Highway 131. Two of those six resulted in tickets being issued to the drivers, Kaspar said.
Steamboat Springs Police Department officers responded to a couple calls, including one crash between a snowplow and a car, Officer Stuart Hutton said. There also was a rollover crash on 13th Street near the James Brown Soul Center of the Universe Bridge. There were no injuries in either of those crashes, Hutton said.
The Routt County Sheriff's Office also responded to six cars off the road by Friday afternoon.
Forecasters with the National Weather Service's Grand Junction office reported a measurement of 8 inches of snow at a location one mile southeast of Steamboat Springs.
The region was under a winter weather advisory through 6 a.m. this morning, but forecaster Tom Renwick said snow could continue into tonight with an additional 2 to 4 inches likely. Precipitation should remain snow, as opposed to rain.
"It's not going to get any warmer; I can tell you that," he said.
Today's high is forecast at 38 degrees, with an overnight low of 24 degrees.
Mostly sunny skies are forecast through much of next week, with daytime highs in the mid-40s and overnight lows in the 20s.
