Explore downtown Steamboat

Main Street offers unique stores, restaurants

Jon Lupo

— It takes more than a great ski mountain for a resort town to thrive.

Unlike so many of its fellow Rocky Mountain ski towns, Steamboat Springs is anchored by a downtown district alive with personality -ifrom century-old buildings to a thriving arts scene to world-class dining. Throw in Steamboat’s “down-home” character and blue-collar feel, and it’s easy to understand why visitors return year after year for the Steamboat experience.

That experience begins and ends in the heart of downtown Steamboat. While the storefronts have changed over the decades, the allure of spending a beautiful Northwest Colorado summer day strolling along Lincoln Avenue hasn’t. In fact, it continues to get better.

“Downtown is the heart of a friendly Western community where ranchers, skies and artisans all sit at the same table,” says Tracy Barnett, director of Mainstreet Steamboat Springs. “Everything happens in downtown Steamboat.”

Summer is an exciting time to be downtown.

Hungry residents and visitors line up outside popular breakfast eateries like Winona’s and Creekside Cafe. Sixth Street comes alive Saturday mornings from June through August with weekly farmers markets, featuring dozens of vendors offering everything from locally produced foods to handcrafted art.

Spend the middle of the day browsing Main Street’s impressive selection of boutique shops and independent, locally owned businesses.

Restaurants like Mambo Italiano and Cantina buzz with happy hour revelers enjoying cocktails on outdoor patios.

And as good as downtown’s shopping and entertainment district is today, its future looks even brighter.

Several large-scale development projects are nearing completion, including the Victoria at 10th and Lincoln, Alpenglow at Fifth and Lincoln, and Howelsen Place at Seventh and Lincoln. The added retail space will improve the shopping and dining experience of locals and visitors alike, not to mention the addition of landmark buildings in terms of architecture and craftsmanship.

“The changes that are happening to downtown are so exciting -inew retail businesses, more residents living downtown -iit will be vibrant 24/7,” Barnett said.

“It should really energize downtown.”

And you thought you liked downtown Steamboat Springs before.
