June 23, 2010: Robinson, Grewal win Town Challenge race in Steamboat
Steamboat Springs — It would take awhile and more space to list the resumes of Tammy Jacques-Grewal and Rishi Grewal.
But consider the bare bones facts.
Tammy did four years with the U.S. National road cycling team and 10 years with the U.S. mountain bike team. Rishi was a five-time road team member and did six years with the mountain bike team.
The two have won mounds of races, across multiple disciplines all across the globe.
The two are also the newest members and coaches at the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club.
"Both Tammy and I have moved across the different genres," said Rishi, who also is a three-time 24-hour solo world champion. "From road racing, where we both started, we worked our way through that to mountain biking to endurance riding. We've been successful internationally in both of those disciplines, and we want to bring those qualities to the Sports Club."
The program, in its seventh year, allows riders to compete in mountain and road cycling events across the state. The team generally has done well, especially on the mountain biking side.
What Tammy Jacques-Grewal and Rishi Grewal will bring to the team, however, is years of top-level training and riding.
"We plan to bring that experience to the kids," Tammy said. "Cycling is more than just riding at the front or riding in a pack. It's very tactical. You have to be really savvy. We also want to teach them the skills of racing and training and at the same time have fun."
Both have been retired from professional racing for several years, but their accomplishments make their hiring a huge coup for the Winter Sports Club.
Tammy registered 16 top-10 World Cup finishes and has been a consistent top finisher in many local races. Rishi, whose brother Alexi won a gold medal in road cycling at the 1984 Olympics, has 103 career victories and raced for Klein.
Both have coached before and said they are excited for the possibilities that lie ahead with the Winter Sports Club.
In addition to training regimens, the two said they'd impart racing tactics and secrets that few — like those with resumes like the Grewals — have.
"Bike racing and the Winter Sports Club cycling is a really fun way to spend your summer," Rishi said. "It's exciting; it's fast paced. We want to get some more folks out and let's go racing."
