Diva’s Day event to raise funds for Sustainability Council
February 10, 2011
Steamboat Springs — Relaxing and raising money for a worthy cause can be hard work.
That's the impression one might get, anyway, from reading the schedule for Saturday's Diva's Day event presented by Alpine Initiatives to benefit the Yampa Valley Sustainability Council.
The all-day, women-only event starts with yoga at 6:45 a.m. and then powers through Zumba at Elevation Dance Studio; skate skiing, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing at Howelsen Hill; lunch; more activities and another yoga session before winding down at about 5 p.m. with wine and sushi.
And there's no chauffeur between activities, either.
"We're not using a car all day — we're walking to all the different activities," Emmanuelle Vital said.
She's the operations director for Alpine Initiatives, a mountain-community-based organization that promotes social, ecological and agricultural sustainability efforts worldwide. Vital said supporting the Yampa Valley Sustainability Council is a natural fit.
There were "a few spots" remaining for Saturday's event as of Wednesday afternoon, she said.
The event is capped at 20 people and costs $100.
Vital said participants will vote on whether the $2,000 raised will benefit the Sustainability Council in general, its Zero Waste Initiative or its community greenhouse effort.
Jen Johnson will lead the event's snowshoe hike and also will speak about 11.7Africa, an African tour operator. She said Saturday's event is about giving back.
"It's a day of getting women in the community together and celebrating our mountain community," Johnson said.
