Continental Divide Trail Run proves its popularity in Steamboat

Luke Graham

The sold-out Continental Divide Trail Run provides breathtaking views of the Yampa Valley during its 16-mile course from Fish Creek Falls up the back side of Mount Werner and down to Thunderhead. Here, Cara Marrs nears the finish of the 2010 race.

— The 2011 Ski Haus Continental Divide Trail Run takes place Sunday, but if you haven't signed up yet, don't plan on participating.

The sold-out race will send runners about 16 miles from Fish Creek Falls over the Continental Divide to Thunderhead at Steamboat Ski Area.

The race begins at 8 a.m. from the Fish Creek Falls parking lot.

Because of limited parking, race officials are asking racers to meet at 7 a.m. at the Knoll Parking Lot on Mount Werner Road, where a shuttle will take racers to the starting line.

The 16-mile trail run, which is part of the Trail Runner Magazine Trophy Series, takes runners along the Fish Creek Trail to the Mountain View Trail before finally reaching Long Lake. Runners then cross the Mountain View Trail and end up at the summit of Mount Werner. Runners then will follow trails down to the top of the gondola. The run has more than 4,500 feet of elevation gain.

A clothing drop will be at the start, and racers can take the gondola down after the race.
