Classic burger joint Back Door Grill opens takeout window

— Steamboat diners now can grab classic burger fare out of the takeout window in the Ghost Ranch's building on Seventh Street.

Back Door Grill launched with a soft opening at the end of last week, and the new food venue attracted a good crowd with people gathering around the handful of tables and umbrellas in the alley along the creek.

A classic, one-patty burger is $6.95, and a large basket of fries is $3.95 while onion rings are $4.95.

The burger joint is the work of Brandi and David Eliason, who both also work for E3 Chophouse. Brandi is the pastry chef for the Yampa Street steakhouse, and David is the general manager.

Back Door Grill is their own venture, but it's made possible by a partnership with E3 Chophouse and the Ghost Ranch.

The Ghost Ranch's kitchen will provide more space for Brandi to create breads and pastries for E3, and Back Door Grill will use E3 Black Angus beef for its burgers.

Before moving to Steamboat Springs in September, Brandi was the executive pastry chef for the Four Seasons in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

For Back Door Grill, Brandi will be making the buns and breads for burgers, BLTs and grilled cheese sandwiches in-house along with the all-natural onion rings and fries.

David said he sees the grill as being an affordable grab-and-go option for people on their lunch breaks or needing a quick meal on the way to work.

Back Door Grill will be open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. or sometimes a little later.

As part of the deal to use the kitchen, the operation also will provide food during events at the Ghost Ranch. The location will give the Back Door Grill a front-row seat for the downtown Farmers Market's first year on Seventh Street between Lincoln Avenue and Yampa Street, which starts Saturday.

Breakfast service is on the horizon for Back Door Grill this fall, David said.

The grill is taking phone orders at 970-871-7888 to make it even quicker for workers pressed for time to swing by for a burger.

"The goal is to provide quick, pick-up meals for locals," David said.
