Chili cook-off is set for Sunday in Clark

Steamboat Springs — After event organizer Chris King put a bug in Pam Heinrich's ear about entering the Great North Routt Chili Cook-off, the Steamboat Springs resident and cooking contest rookie headed home and started putting "a little of this and a little of that" in a red chili recipe, she said.
Heinrich's strategy worked for the 2009 cook-off, as her "Elkalope Sweet Thang" chili took first place in the North Routt cook-off's red chili competition. She plans to take a similar approach to this year's competition, working with the same basic formula for a chili that "turns out different every single time," she said.
"I had a lot of fun, and I won. … I've got a reputation to uphold here. I can't start something and not finish it," Heinrich said about her second run at chili-related bragging rights.
The eighth annual Great North Routt Chili Cook-off is from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Glen Eden Family Restaurant & Tavern in Clark. Admission is $10 for all-you-can-eat chili samples, cornbread and desserts. Families eat for $40; children younger than 7 eat free.
Anyone interested in entering the competition must bring his or her contribution for the red chili, green chili, dessert or "other" category to Glen Eden by 1 p.m. Sunday, said King, who has entered and helped organize the contest since its start. Entries in the "other" category could include soup, white chili, beans or "anything that you don't qualify as a red chili or a green chili," King said.
Registration for cook-off entries is $10; competitors eat free. Proceeds from the annual fundraiser benefit the North Routt Community Charter School and North Routt Preschool.
Chili and "other" category contestants should bring 1.5 gallons of their entries, along with a slow cooker or other heat source, and a ladle, King said. Dessert entries should be large enough for 40 small servings.
King said he expects to see 60 to 65 contestants at the cook-off, which attracted 45 entries and a record crowd of about 600 people in 2009. Through the years the cook-off and fundraiser has featured live music, a silent auction and other activities, King said. Sunday's event will have a silent auction and an opportunity for fun family portraits, he said.
"We're just refining a winning idea. We're opening up more options, and it's still a fundraiser benefiting the kids," King said.
