Campgrounds prepare for Memorial Day weekend
May 22, 2013
Steamboat Springs — A wet spring will limit opportunities for Memorial Day weekend campers in Routt County.
The U.S. Forest Service reports many campgrounds, especially in the northern part of the county, will be closed or restricted this weekend, though plenty of other opportunities exist elsewhere in the county and at area state parks.
Kent Foster, recreation program manager for the U.S. Forest Service based in Steamboat Springs, said crews were able to open portions of Seedhouse Road this week, giving campers more opportunities.
"It's still slim pickings, but they did get a big rock out of the road, so it’s open up to the Seedhouse campground," Foster said.
That campground, the Hinman Campground, and the east-side day-use area at Hahn's Peak Lake join the Steamboat Lake and Pearl Lake state park in offering accessibility this weekend. Stagecoach State Park also will have camping spots available. In the Yampa Ranger District in the southern part of the county, the Blacktail Creek Campground is open.
Elsewhere, all or parts of Aspen, Big Creek Lakes and Teal Lake campgrounds are open in the Parks Ranger District, according to a U.S. Forest Service news release.
Clean water is not yet available at all campgrounds because it must be tested before it’s cleared to be used.
Foster also warned that while campgrounds are beginning to open up, many roads still are closed and could be for several weeks.
"Mostly, that's due to protecting the roads for a couple more weeks," he said. "We will get them open as soon as we can."
