Nearly 5,000 voters had their say, and on Thursday afternoon, all that was left to do was wait for the results.

An audience of hundreds gathered at the Sheraton Steamboat Resort, each eagerly wondering whether his or her name or business would be announced as a Best of the Boat winner.

The Best of the Boat survey, which polled community members about their favorite businesses, places, people and events, ran from Dec. 15 to Jan. 15.

Thursday's results event coincided with the release of Steamboat Living magazine's Best of the Boat edition, which offers stories about many of the winners, showcasing the best of what Steamboat has to offer.

"The event went great, with a huge turnout," said Magazine Editor Eugene Buchanan. "It seems to be getting more and more popular each time we do it."

This year's online survey yielded a record 4,949 entries and hundreds of thousands of votes on 156 questions.

The most popular question fell into the Dining & Drinking category, with Best Sit-Down Breakfast pulling in 3,755 votes.

Ultimately, Creekside Cafe & Grill took home the honors in that category for the second year in a row. Winning by the largest margin was The Hungry Dog, decisively winning Best Hot Dog with 68 percent of the vote.

There also were a few winners this year who didn't have a shot last year.

"This year, we created a new Homes & Real Estate category because so much of our economy relies on that sector," Buchanan said. "As well as a few new additions to our Community category, with such entries as Best Skier, Best Ski Patroller, Best Ski Instructor and Best Teacher. Those seemed pretty well-received also."

Young phenoms Matt Ladley and Maddy Schaffrick took home honors as Best Snowboarder, and if you're looking for some fitness motivation, look no further than Best Biker and Best Runner.

Plumbers, builders, masseuses and favorite community events also were highlighted in the survey results, which are available at

The winners now can bask in the glory of their new titles — that is until the next Best of the Boat survey rolls around.
