Steamboat Springs — The author coming to Off the Beaten Path Bookstore today writes about a group of people not typically embraced in modern society. The protagonist in his newest novel, "The Lonely Polygamist," has four wives and 28 children.
It's the compassion that Brady Udall brings to that character, and others in his novels, that attracted buzz from the literary community and the eye of bookstore owner Ron Krall.
Krall said the book and author came to his attention at an American Booksellers Association Winter Institute. Krall said several aspects of the book made it stand out.
"One is it's an usual topic — polygamy, the practices associated with it, the lifestyle is not something that most of us know much about and don't know about in its human form," he said.
Krall said the personalization of the lifestyle made the book stand out.
"These are real people with nothing but the best of intentions and hopes and wishes for their lives and their loved ones, just like the rest of us," he said.
Krall said this isn't the first time Udall has come to Steamboat Springs.
In 2004, Udall was a part of the often-sold-out Literary Sojourn series and visited the city.
Since then, he has produced more books, and Krall said his writing would attract even first-time readers.
"His characters are very rich and real, and you get just a wonderful insight into these people," Krall said.
Udall's other books are "The Miracle Life of Edgar Mint" and "Letting Loose the Hounds."
Udall will visit the bookstore from 5 to 8 p.m., with an interview and reading at 6 p.m.
Tickets are $10 and redeemable for $7.50 in store credit at the event.
Snacks and a free glass of wine also will be provided to those who attend.
