Art Steamboat brings top prize to town
April 25, 2014
Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat All Arts Festival brings together the arts community for two weeks in August.
It features theater, music, art and workshops. And for the first time, it will feature one giant prize for one talented artist.
As part of the 2014 Steamboat Springs All Arts Festival, there will be a new event: Art Steamboat is a fine art competition featuring works created by top two-dimensional artists from across the region.
Artists from Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Wyoming will enter the contest that will award one with a $10,000 prize.
"It's something where we really take Steamboat as a fine art destination to the next level," said Betse Grassby, a board member for the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association.
Entries are due by June 15, with the top 30 artists notified of their acceptance by June 30. The cost to enter is $40.
The finalists then will be on display for August's First Friday Artwalk at various galleries throughout town. They also will be for sale.
Acclaimed artist Betsy Dillard Stroud then will judge the finalists. Stroud has judged more than 60 international and national shows.
"Really, our goal with the entries is to really bring in the right demographic," said Lindy Schwanke, the events and sponsorship director for the Chamber. "We want to show support for the local art community in town."
On Aug. 15, all the finalists will be gathered, and Stroud will pick a winner. Second place receives $2,500, and third gets $1,000. There also will be a people's choice award.
"We developed it so it could bring together visual artists and galleries," Grassby said. "That's why the finalists will be in Steamboat for two weeks."
The Steamboat All Arts Festival runs from Aug. 8 to 17. For a complete schedule, click here.
