5 fashion trends for fall in Steamboat Springs

Elizabeth Watkins, store manager for Quiksilver and Chez Nous, holds a few of the items that are expected to warm up these chilly fall days. Fur is back, especially in vest form.

— In Steamboat Springs, fall is the time between when biking season gets a bit chilly and when the Steamboat Ski Area’s lifts start churning.

It's not only a beautiful time of year, but also an important period during which new gear and ski fitness become a priority.

But don't forget the closet transition. Sometime soon, flip-flop weather will be a distant memory and it will be time to dig through those piles of sweaters for something equally warm, waterproof and fashionable.

While locals like to think of Steamboat as a bubble, Ski Town USA isn't entirely isolated from the fashion world.

So if you want to add to your early winter wardrobe, local retail managers and storeowners shared how Steamboat will be wearing the fashion trends this fall:

1. Fur is back

Whether it's faux or for real, stock up on furs. The luxurious trend is back, and Chez Nous' Elizabeth Watkins said it's "fur vests mainly, in any color from black to white. It's nice for Steamboat because it's stylish but warm."

And it's not just fur bringing texture back this season. Local stores are stocked full of shearling-lined and feathery pieces.

2. Function is fashion for men

Kris Allen of Allen's Clothing has a standard winter outfit. Kuhl pants are his go-to: they're stylish, outdoorsy and pair perfectly with a pair of SmartWool or Point6 socks.

"Kuhl is really working good for Steamboat," he said. "You can dress it up or down."

And ski gear can serve a fashionable purpose, too.

Kill two birds with a colorful base layer underneath ski clothes, which can easily be dressed up with a button-up or coat after leaving the slopes. Deep burgundy and even purple is perfect, guys.

3. Go West

In Steamboat, stylish Western wear is a must — whether you're decked out in leather and fringe or simply accenting with a pair of boots.

Calamity Pass Trading Co., a vintage store in downtown Steamboat Springs, has one-of-a-kind boots, fringed leather accessories and hand tie-dyed vintage slips for layering to the max.

Symonds said wear your classic cowboy boots over jeans or leggings, and don't forget that you can keep your summer dresses and skirts in the rotation.

"How cute is that, so go out in your boots and your dress," Symonds said. "It's simple and it's warm."

4. Smooth textures and bold patterns

Aztec and Native American prints were everywhere this summer and seem to be hanging around for fall, Allen and Watkins said.

And instead of standard jeans, Watkins said the smooth, waxed denim look is "the new leather."

Pick a deep and bold color like a burgundy, mustard or burnt orange in waxed denim and pair with a chunky sweater.

"It's your favorite fall colors, just updated textures," Watkins said.

5. Accessories will warm you up

Scarves are fall weather's best friend, and Watkins said not to be afraid of setting a floral scarf against a geometric-patterned sweater.

And if you've never worn a hat before, there's bound to be a style that suits you. Fedoras, pork pie hats and golf caps recall a retro style, and Symonds said a Calamity Pass favorite is the flat brim cowboy hat that lends a bohemian flair.
