Steamboat Springs — A 13th Street espresso café is moving downtown this spring, with plans to expand its menu and space under a new name and logo.
Spill the Beans co-owners Al and Tasha Compos said Monday that April 1 likely is their last day of business on Steamboat Springs' west side, near Bud Werner Memorial Library and the Depot Art Center. They purchased Spill the Beans about a year ago and opened in June 2010 after remodeling the interior. They're about to remodel again — Tasha Compos said Monday that they plan to do significant interior work in April at their new address, 427 Oak St., before potentially opening there by May 1.
The business will match its new address with a new name, MountainBrew. The 427 Oak St. location is a green house on the Lincoln Avenue side of Oak Street. The house backs onto the Alpiner Lodge and formerly housed some county offices.
Compos said the move will nearly double the size of the cafe's current space. She said MountainBrew will offer expanded lunch and breakfast menus along with more seating, including an outdoor patio. The use of two bathrooms in the downtown location will allow the business to comply with county health codes for a seating capacity of more than 15 people, Tasha said.
She said customers still should recognize the business after the move.
"It's going to have the same kind of feel that (Spill the Beans) has," she said. "It's still us."
Compose said she and Al will miss the west side spot.
"We've really loved the neighborhood. Fairview is really supportive," she said. "Hopefully, our loyal customers will follow us."
In addition to coffees, breakfasts and lunches, Spill the Beans offers catering and fresh baking by Compos daily. The business takes many pastry orders for large events, Tasha said, and delivers lunches, as well.
"We definitely do a lot of things," she said. "We've really diversified the business."
Steve and Linda Lewis own the 13th Street building that houses Spill the Beans. Steve Lewis declined to comment on possible future uses for the space. He said while he's always sorry to lose a tenant, there's a silver lining for Al and Tasha Compos.
"They've been great tenants," Lewis said Monday, standing outside the cafe. "I'm so pleased that they need more space … it's a success story."
