I just got notice that Wildhorse Meadows will start selling their "Affordable" studios, 1-Bedroom, and 2-bedroom condos. Again, these developers missed the mark when it comes to the working families here in Steamboat and Routt County who need "real" affordable single family housing. Not bachelor pads.
Here is a copy of my email response their announcement:
"Hi Abbey,
Unfortunately, these are not for couples with children who are in need of a larger place to live other than a 2 bedroom condo. It's sad, actually, that there are no "real" affordable single family homes in Steamboat/Routt County.
If you have any affordable single family homes coming up in this project (affordable meaning below $275,000 for a family that does NOT have huge amount of liquid assets laying around) then we might be interested.
I appreciate your email updates on the Wildhorse Meadows though.
Thanks again,"
We should write to the city council to make immediate changes to these policies for developer/builders to provide real "affordable" single family housing to us and stop providing bachelor pads. There are plenty of these around the area.
An option to go out side the county will not help offset the additional costs of gas, maintenance, and/or bus fees (yes, they do charge to ride the bus from Craig).
A studio? Let's see who would live in a studio? A single or a couple who gets along really well. I didn't think anyone built studios anymore. Wonder how "affordable" these units will be. I bet the studio comes in at $325,000 and the rest go up from there. Stop trying to help the working force with affordable places to buy, we need affordable places to rent!
Gus, Right on! I totally agree. There is a big population for Steamboat citizens that for what ever reason do not want to buy a house. For instance, a couple that is just moving in together, for the first time, SHOULD not buy anyhing big together. Or, CMC students, these idividuals are here to go to school not buy a home.
For those of you that think that a person can buy a house for the time and if need/want be sell it, have you ever tried it? I personally know people who suceed in the sale and some who do not and are now in horrible debt.
Lastly, why should we have to buy a house in order to "afford" steamboat?
Most 1Bdrm units are approximately the same size in square footage as a studio unit. You still get a full kitchen; just no real, enclosed bedroom. A lot of times, you have the same space for the bedroom (and not just a sofa sleeper instead of a bed) and just no separation wall. That separation wall can mean the difference in price, and sometimes significantly. It's a better way to start. My wife and I lived at Walton Village for 5yrs-ish. We outgrew it in 2yrs, but we stayed to save money in order to buy a house. So a couple living in a studio isn't unheard of. It all depends on what you are willing to do in order to save money.
I agree that lower rental rates would be in order, also. Unfortunately, this town thrives on rentals...especially nightly.
What I don't understand is cjbecker's post with the email response. Who responded to whom? Did cjbecker ask to be put on the email waiting list for an affordable unit to come up? At first, I thought the response was FROM Wildhorse, which I found odd. There was a "to" or "from" missing from the line: "Here is a copy of my email response their announcement:"

Oh man,
I got all dreamy there when I read $275,00 for a single family home in the Boat. I swear, I heard the beggining of Fleetwood Macs, "Everywhere".
Wow
