If you are talking about the "Bobs Big Boy" it started in Glendale, California in the mid 1930's or so.

Yes..in some parts it's called Bob's...for some reason some are Bob's Big boy some are Shoneys Big boy...either way ...what a burger and check that grip

Bob's is the original, there is also Frisch's and I believe Shoney's is a franchise of Frisch's, but they no longer display the Big Boy name or image. The original Bob's had some sort of Thousand Island dressing, while Frisch's developed their famous tartar sauce. I have never had a Bob's Big Boy, but have had at least a million Frisch's Big Boys. You can buy the tartar sauce and make them yourself when desperate, but not quite the same at home.
As for the "grip", Morty, I believe they are looking at the other hand. There are many many different poses of the Big Boy, but the original is with one hand holding a plate in the air with the other hand "fisted". I believe it is to depict him running with a Big Boy. Bob's came up with the name Big Boy, which was actually named for a chubby little boy (customer) and the Big Boy image is based on a caricature of this chubby little boy.
Bob's seem to be scattered around the US, while Frisch's are in the midwest, with the first one being in Cincinnati.
